Copyright/Licensing 101

Why Is Copyright/Licensing Important?

As a general rule, if the client did not create media/content themselves, we should be questioning it's source.

But why does it matter?

If we use media/content on a website that we do not own we open ourselves and our clients up to potential legal problems. It's a lot of trouble that can be avoided by learning to recognize when media/content may not be fully owned by our client.

How does my research before submitting a ticket help?

In short - if we don't need to put the ticket On Hold AM to resolve copyright/license questions, it typically gets finished quicker!

Our goal is always to complete tickets as quickly as we can while also providing the best experience for our client. The better we are set up prior to starting a ticket, the better the turn around time and end result will be!

When we start a ticket and we see that media/content does not seem to belong to a client, we end up needing to put the ticket On Hold AM instead of being able to work directly through the request.

If you suspect that a client's media/content may be stock/belong to someone else and can resolve this BEFORE submitting a ticket, we are better able to work on the request then and there instead of needing to send back to resolve copyright issues!
